We recently had a critical pump fail unexpectedly, and upon investigation, found the bearing on the motor side had completely seized. Our routine visual and vibration checks often focused on the more accessible pump-side bearing, which showed minimal wear. The motor-side bearing, however, was partially obscured by the coupling guard and didn’t lend itself to quick visual checks during rounds. By the time we noticed any unusual noise or vibration, it was already too late, leading to extended downtime and a more complex repair than a proactive replacement. It highlights how our standard inspection routes can inadvertently create blind spots for components that are physically harder to access. How do others ensure critical but less visible components get proper attention in their maintenance routines?
